The Handy Man

Notes: [This] seemed awfully familiar when I read it. Then I realized it was the EXACT same story as V-532 "The Sorcerer" (6 pp., art by Jack Kirby & Dick Ayers),in Journey into Mystery #78 (Mar 1962). In both, a strange young man (named Billy in JIUW 48, Aaron in JIM 78) walks out of the desert and into the life of a pretty girl (Janie Danner vs. Lucy Scott) and her father, who run a gas station. The young man has an uncanny knack for repairing things, and is hired to help out. He and the girl fall in love. Soon, other strange characters appear, saying they are sorcerers and have come to take the young man back to their ranks! He gets to stay but is stripped of his powers. Overstreet bills the latter as a "prototype" so I guess the earlier story is a prototype of a prototype. I wonder who got the writer's fee when stories were recycled like this? Tom Lammers
