Reprint Notes:
In my quest to accumulate every Ditko Atlas-Marvel fantasy story under a
single massive photocopy collection I've come across an instance of Marvel
butchery. In KULL THE DESTROYER #12 (Feb/74) is a reprint of the Ditko
story "The Stone Man" from JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #70 (July/61). The job # of
V-224 is gone from the reprint and the first page looked so foreign and
bizzare that I wondered if this was an unpublished story. I had to really
search to track down the original source and when I did find the original in
a box here I immediately realized what was wrong and what had happened.
First, Marvel in 1974 replaced the title logo with a smaller and re-lettered
version. Second, the original story is a full-page splash page, as is all
of the Ditko gems from this period. Marvel shrunk the full-page splash
panel and added the first 2 panels from page 2 underneath. Third, 4
different panels were then removed from the story and the copy/dialogue from
one was inserted into another to carry the story properly, thereby editing
the story down from 5 pages to 4.
Horrors! it makes me wonder what else was likely done as I consider all the
atlas reprints Marvel reprinted in the early 1970's. All the indexers of
the reprint titles should keep this in mind and try to compare them to the
original stories.
