Stories

Notes: Whenever I see a book from early 1955, I have a look to see if I can find any sign of comic code interference. The code was installed with books dated February and March '55. In one case (Joe Sinnott's Sarah), the comic code interference was obvious. They used that story to show how much good they could do... but I have still to find another example as dramatic as that. On the whole, I have found one or two instances of weapons being removed from soldiers' hands and that's about it. This story does have a strange sequence that may or may not indicate that it has been changed at some point -- if it has, though, it was done with no seams visible. In the story (shown on the cover as well), a matronly-looking woman mysteriously escapes death a couple of times. At the end of the story, it is revealed that her mousey husband is actually her guardian angel. In the middle of all that, two gangsters who want to know her secret come into their house with their pistols drawn. On the next panel, they mention how strange it is that the woman survived their bullets... which we haven't even seen at all -- it would make much more sense if the woman was shot in the first panel. Was this story redrawn? If so, it was re-sent to its artist, who did a seamless job... but left with the original text intact? Not a very likely scenario, but still a puzzler. - Ger A.
